Why are GCN surveys required?
Surveys are required where ponds and suitable terrestrial habitat are present within or near a site. They help to:
- Ensure compliance with the Habitats Regulations and Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
- Provide robust evidence for planning applications
- Assess potential impacts on breeding ponds and terrestrial habitat
- Inform mitigation, compensation, and licensing
Survey methods
Our surveys follow recognised guidance, including Natural England standing advice, CIEEM best practice, and the Great Crested Newt Mitigation Guidelines. Methods include:
- Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) assessments of ponds
- eDNA testing to detect presence/absence efficiently
- Traditional survey methods such as torch surveys, bottle trapping, egg searches, and netting
- Terrestrial habitat assessment to inform impact evaluation
Survey methodology and seasonal constraints
- eDNA surveys: mid-April to June
- Presence/absence surveys: mid-March to June
- Population surveys (if required): April to June (multiple visits)
- Surveys must be carefully timed to meet guidance and ensure valid results.
